Anyone who has struggled with their weight knows about emotional eating, they might just not be aware of it. You know those times where you feel down and you want to eat to feel better?
It could also be anger, frustration, being bored, almost any emotion. This is one thing that someone with weight issues has developed as a coping mechanism of ‘dealing with’ these emotions, I put that in quotation marks because you aren’t really dealing with anything, you’re actually just stuffing them down with food. Which works only temporarily, because in no time those same emotions will come back up crying out for attention, and then you’ll have to eat more and more to stuff them down. And then you wonder why you have weight issues?
If to illustrate this example I swapped food with alcohol or drugs then it’s much more obvious and you can see how people use them as a coping mechanism. Well food can be the same thing, that’s what it was for me. And can be just as damaging if you pile on weight, for your health and your Self Esteem and how you feel about yourself.
How did you develop this? Well sometime when you were younger you started to use food to feel better. It might have been that your grandma would cook you cake and other things and tell you it is because she loves you, which makes you think that food = love. In that case you’d turn to food whenever you want to feel better. Or it might be that when you were sick as a kid your mum put you on the couch and gave you lemonade, because apparently it would make you feel better. So then you turn to anything sugary and sweet if you feel down.
Those are both examples from my life, but they are common.
The key is, whatever specific experiences that lead to this for you is to go back to those experiences and HEAL them, release the emotions that were causing you to eat the food and shift it so you represent those past memories in a different way.
